Largest Spider in the World – Goliath Bird-Eater

Largest Spider in the World by Mass

We got an up close look at the largest spider in the world at a reptile expo in New York and we were thoroughly impressed! Video footage and pictures do not do justice to actual size that this spider can grow to become. The Goliath Bird Eating Spider is considered to be the largest spider in the world. It’s leg-span measures up to 11 inches and weight over 170 grams. ┬áIt belongs to the tarantula family theraphosidae. Although it was called the goliath bird eating spider, this species of spider rarely eat birds, and was named when an early engraving was found depicting one of these spiders eating a hummingbird.

Huntsman Spider

Huntsman Spider

This species is considered to be the largest spider by mass, but is second to the huntsman spider in leg-span, which grow to exceed 12 inches in leg-span.
